Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy and is it safe?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses the client’s natural trance states (like you experience when driving) to assist in uncovering the feelings, thoughts and memory patterns that led to the problem, and which continue to maintain it.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy draws upon techniques  taken from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt, Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Positive Psychology and yes it is safe. I have been trained to the highest standards and regularly participate in CPD.

What can be treated with Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

Quite a lot really. Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help alleviate anxiety, improve confidence, public speaking, stage fright, anger management, pain relief, trauma. The list is endless. Please feel free to contact me for a no obligation chat to see if I can help you or recommend another specialist who may be able to help. I am certainly not pushy and as a therapy geek, I actually look for every opportunity to talk about Cog Hyp and what it can do.

Will I lose control during a session?

You will be in full control, I cannot make you do or say anything against your will and you will not end up clucking like a chicken. However I will try to relax and calm you. Cognitive Hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis. There is a very insightful video on my home page which explains it in more detail.

Are you registered and what training have you had?

I am registered with the national Council of Hypnotherapists and Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapist Practitioners Association.

The NCH is the UK’s leading not-for-profit Hypnotherapy Professional Association. All practising members are fully insured and trained to the highest standards, so you can choose a hypnotherapist with confidence QCHPA membership ensures you that you are working with a therapist who has been trained to the highest standards and who has a proven record of meaningful research behind them.

I have been trained by the quest institute and have attained the H.P.D which is accredited by the NCFE. As part of my QCHPA and NCH membership, I am required to participate in CPD. Please give me prior notice should you wish to see my qualifications as I keep them at home and not at the clinic.

For PTSD and trauma, I am fully trained in AMDR (Applied Memory Deconstruction and Reconsolidation)

(Applied EMDR), is based on a clear understanding of the neuroscience behind every step of the standard EMDR protocol, and blending that into the elements of our Quest model (Context, Process, Structure, Consequence, Timeline, Parts, solution focus, and ILOC/ELOC), so that we can integrate EMDR principles into our practice. The AMDR approach  is an effective set of steps and resourcing tools. There is particular emphasis on Resources, and on how and why these change the neurobiology of memory in the brain.

I am fully conversant in how and when to apply bilateral brain stimulation to help clients to desensitise and reconsolidate traumatic memories and events and how to install and reinforce changes and to work safely with higher levels of trauma.

I am fully insured and registered with the Information Commissioners Office.

Are you DBS checked?

Yes, I am enhanced DBS checked. An enhanced DBS check is the most detailed and in-depth criminal record and barring check that can be carried out in the United Kingdom. Please let me know if you would like me to bring my certificate to the session for viewing.

How many sessions will I need and how long does a session last?

Each session lasts approximately 60  minutes. The first session is usually the longest as this is the history take session where we get to know each other and discuss our goals.  I can’t say how many sessions you will need as we treat the behaviour and not the person. We are all individuals and work at different speeds. The average I would say is 3 to 6 sessions but this can be more or less. PTSD and Trauma usually takes considerably more session.  I will endeavour to do it in the least amount of sessions as possible.

Whereabouts are you based?

I operate online and face to face from a purpose built studio in Wilstead, Bedfordshire along with other medical, alternative and holistic experts. I will let you know the precise directions upon booking. It is a lovely haven with excellent facilities where you can relax and participate in other activities.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes I do. However, we do require there to be peace and quiet with no distractions. An ethernet cable is also useful along with a good internet connection.

Do you offer a guarantee?

No, I apologise for being blunt but I want to be honest, open and transparent. I guarantee that I will try my best to help you but I cannot guarantee the success. I don’t put you to sleep, say some magic words and hey presto you’re cured. We work together and I help you find the solution within you. We may face some challenges but I will be with you all the way, I will be available to be contacted between sessions.  I may give you homework to do or downloads to listen to.  I would be very wary of any therapist who guarantees success.

How much does a session cost and what’s included?

Each session costs £80 and can be paid via bank transfer, all major cards, Paypal, cash, Apple and GooglePay.  This includes free downloads and I am free to be contacted by phone or email between sessions. I may not be able to answer straight away but I will get back to you.  We are on this journey together.

When do I pay and is there a cancellation policy?

Payment of £80 is required 48 hours before each session. This is because I prepare for the sessions  and book the rooms in advance. 24 hours notice of cancellation will be required for a full refund otherwise a cancellation fee of £15 will be retained. This is because I still have to pay for the room and I will have already prepared for the session. A no show will incur a fee of £80. This is because I lose the cost of the room, I will have prepared for the session, driven to and from the clinic and waited an hour for your arrival. The remainder of the fee will be either carried over to the next session or refunded.

Is there anybody that you cannot see?

It is with regret that I am unable to work with people who have conditions such  epilepsy, psychosis, Borderline personality disorder, Bi Polar or are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Please let me know if you are unsure and consult your GP prior to booking an appointment.

Are the sessions confidential?

Yes. I am registered with the information commissioners office and all data is stored securely. However If you are a danger to yourself or others I may be obliged to seek outside help as to which I will inform you first of all.
